A YOUNG man left with life changing injuries following a car accident is set to address Court of Protection Professional Deputies to highlight the impact a no blame car accident has had on his life when there is no personal injury claim.

Will Mieville-Hawkins, 27, will open the Frenkel Topping Deputy Day 12^th Annual Conference on Thursday 3 May.

The former trainee teacher will be joined by a programme of esteemed speakers from the judiciary Court of Protection for personal injury and clinical negligence legal profession, including Mr Andrew Ritchie QC and Alan Eccles from the Office of the Public Guardian.

The current issues facing Professional Deputies, who manage the financial affairs of adults who are deemed mentally incapable of doing this themselves, will be discussed at the one-day conference.

Following the accident in 2016, Will was in a coma for a month and sustained injuries that left him unable to walk and use his left arm, he also suffered acute memory loss.

Will said: “I spent eight months in hospital, where I had to learn to walk and talk again. I’m still receiving physio and psychotherapy treatment. Because of the nature of the accident I’ve not been able to lodge a personal injury claim.

“My treatment has been funded by the NHS, family and friends, charity and crowd funding. My recovery and the financial impact it has had on me and my family has been devastating, but slowly I am rebuilding my life.”

Will’s inspirational speech “Being Will” will give Professional Deputies an insight into what it is like for families when there is no case for a personal injury claim. Wendy Hawkins, Will’s mother, will also provide a parent’s perspective.

Alan Eccles, Chief Executive of the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) and a barrister of 30 years will present a progress report on the changes within the OPG.

The event will be chaired, and keynote address provided by Andrew Ritchie QC, the country’s leading clinical negligence and personal injury lawyer.

Mr Ritchie QC will discuss matters arising from deprivation of liberty decision with experience in practice from Stacey Bryant, Legal Director at Enable Law.

Further sessions will be led by Caroline Hilder, a Senior Judge from the Court of Protection, Ed Lamb, a barrister from 9 Gough Square Chambers and Mark Holt, Commercial Director at Frenkel Topping.
