No1 British champion snowboarder, aged 12, signs with elite Manchester physiotherapist
One of Britain’s most promising female snowboarders – 12-year-old Mia Brookes – has been officially wrapped in cotton wool.
Mia, an already incredibly accomplished snowboarder who currently ranks 46th in the world women rankings, has now signed up to the elite athlete programme at Manchester physiotherapy practice Harris & Ross, in order to protect her physical development.
Already tipped for greatness, Mia is working directly with director and founder of Harris and Ross, Jeff Ross, who has a wealth of experience working with elite athletes, holding the position as head physiotherapist for the New Zealand Football and Rugby League team and Sale Sharks Rugby Union team, as well as working with first team at Manchester City Football Club and Red Bull sponsored athletes across a range of sports.
Jeff has earned a prestigious reputation throughout his career, using his skillset and extensive experience in elite sport to deliver a high level of care, and 12-year-old Mia is the latest addition to his clientele.
At the age of six, Mia began entering indoor events in the UK and is currently emerging as a serious talent within the British snowboard scene, gaining multiple podiums this year both at home and abroad, and is expected to challenge for medals at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Games.
Undoubtedly one of the most exciting young talents, not just in the UK, but in snowboarding globally, the sporting authorities are determined that Mia’s physical development is to be monitored carefully.
In order to maximise the chances of success, Mia’s health must remain in impeccable condition. To ensure this, she will be working closely with Harris and Ross Physiotherapists to maintain and enhance her performance as her body develops.
Jeff Ross said: “It is a privilege to work with such a talented and enthusiastic young athlete.
“With Mia competing at an elite level of sport, at such a young age, it is imperative that her health and development is not at risk. It is our job to ensure she gets all the support and treatment required to maximise her performance on the slopes, whilst guaranteeing that physical well-being is not affected, both now and later in life.
“A high impact sport, such as Snowboarding can have a number of long-term injurious effects on the body. For a young athlete like Mia, it’s important that she practises in a safe environment and gets used to the high impact. She does a variety of different sports already, which is great for us as it will help with flexibility and strengthening different muscles.
“Before we start any treatment, we will do a full screening of Mia, to look specifically at her movement and to see if any areas are particularly tight or loose. We will then tailor a plan that will work on specific areas that need it the most, as well as helping her to build up strength to keep her fit and hopefully prevent any career changing injuries, that could have an impact on her potential as an athlete.”
Mia herself has already recognised the importance of injury prevention and has quickly come to appreciate what a strong support network can offer – “Working with Jeff on my initial consultation was awesome, we had a lot of fun in our session and he has already identified some areas of weakness that we can work on, I’m so grateful to have the support that Harris & Ross are offering and can’t wait to see them again soon!”
Harris and Ross are highly experienced in injury prevention and use a sports model of rehabilitation, aiming to get patients back to full fitness in the shortest, most appropriate time frame.
Their experienced staff, access to state of the art facilities and close relationships with some of the UK’s leading surgeons and radiologists, creates a complete, bespoke care package.
Harris and Ross, formed in 2004 and have since worked with an array of internationally recognised athletes. With over 20 experienced practitioners on the team, their elite credentials and impressive portfolio continues to flourish, as does their reputation.
